Evening Standard names Osborne editor

I will remain in Parliament, where that future is debated. Robert Barrington, executive director of Transparency International U.K., described Osborne's appointment as a clear conflict of interest, since the media is meant to hold government to account.

The announcement of George Osborne as editor has been met with widespread incredulity and a barrage of accusations that his position as an MP would prevent him from carrying out the role with impartiality.

The red top called on Mr Osborne to donate his pay to charity if he "really wants to be editor while doing everything else" - but said to be an MP should be a "full-time role" and that he was "short-changing constituents and politics".

A spokesman for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called the called the appointment "another example of the establishment revolving door".

"The Evening Standard has already had a centre-right leaning".

Former chancellor George Osborne is the new editor of the London Evening Standard - his sixth paid job - and he still insists he can remain an MP, it was revealed today.

He will reportedly start his new role at the capital's newspaper in mid-May, editing the paper an average of four days a week.

The Tory MP, who was sacked as Chancellor by Theresa May last year, replaces Sarah Sands, who is leaving after five years at the helm to join the BBC.

"I am proud to have an editor of such substance", said the Standard's owner, Evgeny Lebedev, adding that Osborne's socially liberal and economically pragmatic political views matched those of the paper's readers in London. We will judge what the Government, London's politicians and the political parties do against this simple test: is it good for our readers and good for London?

Following the recent reduction in the Evening Standard's print editions, Osborne apparently believes he can edit the newspaper in the morning and attend parliament and do his collection of other jobs and lucrative speaking engagements in the afternoons and evenings, much to the disbelief and private derision of the paper's journalists, a source said. If it is, we'll support them.

Osborne famously failed to get on The Times trainee scheme back in 1993. "Osborne has shown total contempt for those rules, and I am calling for them to be enforced without fear or favour", said the MP. "If it isn't, we'll be quick to say so".

Former BBC journalist and former independent MP for Tatton Martin Bell said: "I think multi-tasking of this scale has never been heard of before and there's a strong case of putting it to the people".

He said: "Once he put himself forward for the position, he was the obvious choice". He can not be the editor of a newspaper and stay on in parliament.

"Unprecedented" is being used alongside "powerful", "clever" and "cunning" as journalists analyze the appointment within the context of a toxic pre-Brexit atmosphere in the country and political infighting. The "gasps" occurred for many reasons, including the fact that Mr Osborne has no experience in journalism.
