Fukushima families 'forced to return to abandoned homes'

Six years after the magnitude-9.0 natural disaster and subsequent tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, people from the region are preparing to return home, reported Reuters.

However, after the area was evacuated, wild boars moved in from the surrounding hills and forests.

There has been a 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the Fukushima nuclear plant since the disaster.

Officials are capturing and killing hundreds of wild boars which are known for attacking humans.

In addition to the radioactive boars, the area also has packs of wild dogs and large colonies of rats which took over supermarkets when people abandoned the area in 2011.

According to the Mirror, Japan is set to lift cordons for parts of Namie, which is located 4km from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant, as well as three other towns.

"It is not really clear now which is the master of the town, people or wild boars", Mayor Tamotsu Baba said.

Anxious that these contaminated boars may attack returning residents, city officials have begun clearing them out by using hunters, The New York Times reports.

In the nearby town of Tomioka, hunter Shoichiro Sakamoto leads a team of 13 assigned to catch and kill the wild boars with air rifles.

But perhaps most risky of all, the marauders carry with them highly radioactive material.

More than half of Namie's former 21,500 residents have decided not to return, however, a government survey showed previous year, citing concerns over radiation and the safety of the nuclear plant, which is being decommissioned.

Families who had to flee their homes after the Fukushima nuclear disaster are now being pressured to return despite high radiation levels in a "looming human rights crisis", a charity has warned.

"After people left, they began coming down from the mountains and now they are not going back", he said.

Since April past year, over 300 boars have been killed.
