House Oversight Committee questions White House about Trump's deleted tweets

While it may seem like a simple correction, concerns have been raised that, if the original messages were not correctly archived, the deletion of tweets could represent a violation of the US Presidential Records Act.

The letter to agencies also seeks information on how they accommodate Freedom of Information Act requests for documents stored on private e-mail accounts, social media platforms or other non-official communication mediums.

President Trump's security chief kicked reporters out of a White House photo op because they tried to do their jobs and ask the President questions. In fact, it's the tweets that Trump has deleted that are worrying Congress.

On the first full day of his presidency in January, Trump posted a tweet that misspelled the word "honored", before quickly deleting it and reposting the message with the correct spelling.

The Oversight Committee's letter stated that these tweets need to be preserved as a part of public record, which can be done pretty easily. "Numerous messages sent from these accounts are likely to be presidential records and therefore must be preserved", the letter reads. Given Trump's habit of deleting typo-filled tweets, the panel is questioning whether these posts have been properly archived in compliance with the Presidential Records Act. He inherited the latter handle from former President Barack Obama when he took office. He deleted two last week due to misspelling "hereby".

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.

In a statement, the committee said the members sent the letters because of reports "White House officials and federal employees are using various messaging applications to conduct official business" that could violate the records laws.
