Justin Trudeau's Wife Wants to Celebrate Men This Women's Day

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau

I have a hard time mustering much of a reaction to Sophie Grégoire Trudeau's Instagram post for International Women's Day, which called on women to celebrate the male allies in their lives, while showing a picture of her holding hands with Canada's Feminist-in-Chief.

She asked people to "celebrate the boys and men in our lives who encourage us to be who we truly are, who treat girls & women with respect" on 8 March. "Take a picture holding hands with your male ally & share it on social media using the hashtag #TomorrowInHand".

They are calling for more subsidized child care spaces, a national strategy to end gender-based violence and a new law to ensure men and women get equal pay for work of equal value.

And he gave an impassioned defence of a woman's right to choose an abortion - a message of particular resonance in the wake of his recent meeting with a USA president many around the world have branded as a misogynist.

Indeed, it was through a joint Canada-U.S. initiative to promote and foster women in business, reportedly the idea of Trudeau chief of staff Katie Telford, that observers say enabled the federal Liberal government to connect with a White House that few were convinced would listen.

Below that, the second-top comment with more than 400 "likes" was equally critical. "This seems to really miss the whole point", wrote a user named Kristina Kurth Benoit.

A conservative MP Michelle Rempel tweeted "I've never had to have my hand held" and suggested instead to "donate to a charity that opposes female genital mutilation" and other actions that make real life impact.

Gregoire Trudeau posted to Instagram again later in the day, thanking people for their responses. "The negativity this post has brought out does not even make sense".

"For far too many women and girls, unsafe abortions and lack of choices in reproductive health mean that they either are.at risk of death or else simply can not contribute and can not achieve their potential", Trudeau said. The prime minister's wife said message was about "gender equality".

"Well, now we're having a conversation!" she wrote. "This is about recognizing that we should be allies on this journey", she added.
