Lawmakers Hunt Around the Capitol for Obamacare Repeal Bill

Paul said a better alternative, which is included in his own Obamacare replacement plan, is to keep high-risk individuals in the marketplace and allow them to join together as an association to buy health insurance as a group.

One conservative foe, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., said leaders pushed lawmakers hard Thursday to back the bill. Obviously he doesn't want us to see the bill. Rand Paul now says the same Republicans are trying to double down on their efforts in secret. Few details of the proposal have emerged publicly.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky went on a Capitol Hill scavenger hunt Thursday. - Last night, President Trump delivered a bold, optimistic message to the American people.

Cruz and Lee used similar language in tweets this week.

"I've never seen a process that is open and consulted since I've been here", said Sen. "We're going to look for it".

Well, it appears that House Republican leaders finally have a bill drawn up to replace Obamacare. "We are not ignoring the real needs of the working poor". "It would raise out-of-pocket costs for middle-class Americans and their families, because their tax credits would cover less of the cost over time of their insurance premiums than today".

But Trump's continued popularity on the right puts these conservatives in a tough spot. should the president more fully embrace the emerging House plan. "I'm getting the impression it's take it or leave it", Paul said.

The lawmakers are criticizing the developing legislation as "Obamacare lite".

Rep. Mark Meadows, North Carolina Republican and leading critic of the draft plan, this week had criticized the plan by saying it would tax the middle class "to give subsidies to others who could, indeed, be millionaires".

He's the top-ranking Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which will have to approve the bill before the whole House can vote on it. Lawmakers have said the goal is for the two House committees to vote next week in hopes of pushing the legislation through the House and to the Senate before an early April recess. One part of the legislation, handled by the Energy and Commerce Committee, has been made available to members of that panel - but only for inspection behind closed doors.

House Republicans aren't backing down from their Obamacare repeal plan that sparked backlash from the party's conservative wing. Democrats voiced similar complaints. Then with November's election giving them control of the presidency as well as both houses of Congress, they became the dog that caught the vehicle: It was easy to yell about how bad Obamacare was, when there was nothing they could really do about it, but now that repealing it would mean taking healthcare away from millions of people, and replacing it would be a tall and complicated task, the GOP has had to face up to the reality of the situation and figure out how they want to proceed.

"The reason why Republicans were able to comment on the ACA - and of course many of them commented negatively - was because the bill was out there", Pallone said.
