Like It Or Not: Facebook Tests 'Dislike' Reaction Button On Messenger

According to a report in TechCrunch, Facebook was testing out a "thumbs down" reaction in addition to the already available reactions.

A dislike reaction in Messenger makes more sense than in a general news feed.

Now available to a select few users only as the feature is under testing, reactions will let you "react" to a particular message, much like how you can in iMessage using Tapback.

To add a Reaction to a Facebook post, again find one you want to express some sort of sentiment toward, then tap and hold the Like button.

Screenshots provided to the publication by one of Messenger's one billion plus users shows seven different reactions.

When Facebook, based in Menlo Park, finally released its new reaction buttons, however, it didn't include a "dislike" option.

The thinking at Facebook appears to be that a "dislike" function breeds negativity - instead, for this projects, the company considers the thumbs down more of a "no" option to a direct question.

These reactions, if implemented widely, could serve as a quick way to acknowledge and respond to messages without having to type out an entire explanation.

Often, the introduction of a dislike button on Facebook has been speculated.

But apart from the reactions themselves, Facebook has tossed in a "dislike" reaction into the mix as well. Not to mention, many users have been asking for this feature for years.

Last year Facebook made it possible to do more than just "like" posts on Facebook. The current testing is to reflect the emotions or feelings of a user on a message. The expressions included in the Reactions tab are love, laughter, shock or surprise, sadness, anger, like and the highly demanded dislike. That decision likely depends on how testing goes and whether users who have access to it provide positive or negative feedback to Facebook. They're pitching it as a "no" button but it looks like a "dislike" to the rest of the world. Whether people actually like the dislike button is yet to be seen.

The button will be trialled in the Messenger app as a reaction to people's comments.
