Marines create task force amid nude photos uproar

PornHub Marines United comments

In the days since the article was published, the scandal has grown to encompass other branches, while the original group of Marines United members have continued to make splinter groups in an effort keep its community intact.

A criminal investigation has begun, and the top enlisted man in the Marines, Senior Master Sgt. Ronald Green, has told Congress that Marines United is just the "tip of the spear". Gen. Robert Neller, the Marine Corps commandant, has condemned the photo sharing and urged victims to report abuse. A veteran Marine officer, Kate Hendricks Thomas, told Military.com earlier this week that, as a deployed lieutenant, she used to carry around a can of black spray paint to obliterate explicit drawings of herself on the outhouses at the forward operating base she served on.

Several reports late Thursday said the investigation has also spread beyond the Marines to the rest of the military.

Meanwhile, a former Marine, Erin Kirk-Cuomo, said servicewomen have been reporting websites like "Marines United" for more than 10 years but were ignored.

According to his report, Marines United, the initial Facebook group, had around 30,000 members and, in addition to nude photos, included instances of members encouraging the sexual assault of the photographed women.

"It never makes sense to me that the marines are so anxious about how you tie your bootlaces or put on your chevrons, and yet they allow so much harassment to continue", she said.

Neller said the Marine Corps is responding to the allegations "with decisive action" which includes providing support to victims, investigating the attacks and taking "appropriate judicial or administrative action" if criminal behaviour is found. "It's become so normalized in the military that women just have to deal with it alone", she added.

Neller also said he will be testifying on Capitol Hill to the Senate Armed Services Committee next week about the scandal. Speier had issued a similar statement Saturday.

The Marines who posted the images on the Facebook page could face charges.

A Marines spokesman said the Corps was unable to comment at this point on Allred's request. Only current and former members are able to search the group.

Neller said he has spoken with Brennan, a medically retired Marine and Purple Heart recipient, and voiced his disgust that Brennan has reported being threatened by other Marines from the Facebook page.

"I was going to go to Norway this weekend and see a bunch of Marines above the Arctic Circle". Just the Tip, of the Spear was subject of multiple news stories in 2013 and 2014 by the Marine Corps Times and Task and objective.

"I don't know the exact number of Marines that may have been targeted, he told reporters in a Pentagon press conference".

Those posting sometimes provide names and other details of women, including where they are stationed, and lewd comments accompany many posts.
