Merson: West Brom a 'banana skin' for Arsenal

Jonny Evans celebrates after Craig Dawson scored their first goal

Despite reaching the FA Cup semi finals, the last few weeks haven't been great for Arsenal.

Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi have overcome illness but Kieran Gibbs is a doubt with an unspecified knock, while Mohamed Elneny (ankle) and Santi Cazorla (Achilles) are out.

"The FA Cup again offers Arsene Wenger the chance of silverware but it's extending his proud record of Champions League qualification that's more likely to persuade him to sign that contract on his desk".

As we explained on Monday when suggesting Sevilla's Monchi for the role: "Whoever succeeds Wenger at Arsenal will have big boots to fill, and it makes complete sense for Arsenal to hire someone capable of easing the transition, especially on the transfer front".

West Brom are doing well this season and could end up as high as seventh in the Premier League. It is a balanced team with good size, very equipped to deal with the Premier League.

ARSENE WENGER is not considering leaving Arsenal this season and the club is about more than just results, claims Wenger's right-hand man Boro Primorac. "I have talked enough about that", he said.

"I have nothing to say about that anymore", a frustrated Wenger stated.

"We have a tough job because we have six or seven teams fighting for the places". So overall that's our targets.

"They have experienced, organised and efficient from set pieces", Wenger said.

West Brom's only win in the last 13 competitive meetings came at The Hawthorns last season. Success is basically to take the maximum out the potential of a team.

The Baggies have lost their last two league games without scoring a goal, but Wenger will certainly not be execting an easy ride in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off. Although they remain in 8th position, they have lost their last two matches and that will fill Arsenal with confidence.

Wenger is under huge pressure with the Gunners now sitting outside the Premier League top four and having been thumped 10-2 over two legs by Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League.
