Microsoft announces Xbox game pass

The official landing page for the Xbox Game Pass also shows the covers of Fable 3, Terraria, Mad Max and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, so presumably those games will join the service as well.

Even better news for those looking to save money is that should you decide you want to ditch the monthly fee but still keep playing a particular game, you will be able to purchase it at a discount. Though Xbox Insiders will be able to try the service now, Xbox Live Gold members will also receive access prior to Game Pass's launch. If I were to guess, I'd say it'll happen just after E3 - which would give Microsoft a nice platform to show off a bunch of new games joining the service.

If your subscription to Xbox Game Pass expires or is cancelled, any games downloaded through it will no longer be available to you.

Microsoft is now "testing Xbox Game Pass with select members of the Xbox Insider Program".

Each game is fully downloaded rather than streamed. The good news is that Xbox Game Pass won't break the bank; it's pricing is, though not extremely cheap, quite competitive at $9.99 per month.

As of press time, EA are the only publishers who will not be involved, which presumably has more to do with their own EA Access service than any resistance to the idea.

"Xbox Game Pass is your ticket to endless play", Xbox leader Phil Spencer wrote in a blog post.

Add-ons for those games will be available for purchase with the same exclusive discount for Xbox Game Pass members as well. The full version is set to launch later this spring. The service isn't being rolled out to all users right now; instead, it's being made available to Xbox Alpha testers with only a few titles for testing and feedback. Those are solid, and while we know there will be some indies, it looks like there will be top-tier games as well. Meanwhile, Microsoft is now offering it's Game Pass downloading service, which presumably works in tandem with Xbox Live.
