New Facebook video app is launched on Samsung smart TVs

Last month, Facebook announced plans for bringing a standalone video application to the various smart set-top boxes available, such as Apple TV and Samsung TV.

That said, in the case of Samsung, you can normally use your phone's keypad to enter information and control things through the Samsung Smart View app - that doesn't appear to be an option with the Facebook video app.

Currently, the app is ad-free - although that might change in the future, since Facebook is currently exploring how to implement ads mid-way through a video, Recode reported.

Videos are arranged into six channels: Shared by Friends, Following, Recommended for You, Top Live Videos, Saved Videos, and Recently Watched.

It's largely an expansion of a previous feature released in October that let users stream video via AirPlay or similar systems.

Then Facebook flexes its algorithmic muscles with videos it thinks you'll like based on your various activities across the Facebook-connected ecosystem.

Now, fourth-gen Apple TV owners do not have to rely on their smartphone or laptop to watch live videos posted on Facebook. So you can head over there to install it on your Apple TV. When you are watching a live stream, you can automatically see the live comments to the video on the bottom left of the display.

Within each section, just swipe to the right to see all of the videos in that category. It will also offer users relevant videos based on their viewing history and their preferred topics.

To start, Facebook promised to rollout the app for Samsung Smart TV, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV, with "more platforms" to come.
