North Korea jumps on South Korean president's ouster, calling her a 'criminal'

South Korean President Park Geun-Hye was sacked by the country's top court on Friday, as it upheld her impeachment by parliament over a wide-ranging corruption scandal.

The BBC reports that the predicted leftward shift in South Korean politics could see the reopening of a joint venture industrial complex just across the border in North Korea-and could complicate relations with the United States when it is trying to isolate Pyongyang internationally.

The South Korean leader, Park Geun-hye, "had one more year left as "president" but, now she's been ousted, she will be investigated as a common criminal", North Korea's state KCNA news agency reported.

It's the worst time for South Korea President Park's impeachment because of the uncertainty and deterioration in the security situation on the Korean peninsula, according to Viktor Goa, Director of the China National Association of International Studies.

An election for Park's replacement must be held within 60 days, and an ad-hoc cabinet meeting will be held soon, a government official told CNN.

Her lawyer, Seo Seok-Gu, who had previously compared Ms Park's impeachment to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, condemned the verdict as a "tragic decision" made under popular pressure.

Aidan George Foster-Carter, Korea expert and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Leeds University argues that the South Korean public "is not very divided".

A U.S. missile defence system, THAAD, is being deployed to the South in the face of threats from the North, infuriating Beijing, which has imposed a series of measures seen as economic retaliation. Police said two protesters had died.

One woman, who turned down CNN's request for an interview, said she "only had swear words to say about the Constitutional Court".

Huge barriers, manned by dozens of police officers, separate the two protest camps.

-It was a striking end for South Korean President Park Geun-hye. The accident contributed to lawmakers' decision to impeach Park in December past year.

Park, the daughter of a late army-backed dictator, became South Korea's first female president when she was elected in 2012, securing the highest vote share of any candidate in the democratic era.

Park has been holed up in the Blue House with her power suspended since she was impeached, leaving the complex only once, to pay tribute at her parents' graves.

For months she has refused to make herself available for questioning by prosecutors probing the scandal.

Carrying signs and candles, the crowd cheered to speeches and swayed to music Friday night, while angry supporters of Park continued to scuffle with police in streets near the court. She is accused of colluding with a friend into forcing big business to donate millions of euros into return for policy favours. As Park is no longer president, she is vulnerable to prosecution for bribery, extortion, and abuse of power.
