Patriots make trade for Colts TE Dwayne Allen

Harley can't even and neither can

The Patriots have traded a fourth-round draft pick to the Colts in exchange for Allen and a sixth-round selection, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Allen isn't coming off a great season, with just 406 yards on 35 catches, but he is a good red-zone threat and a good blocker.

Allen has three left on the $29.4 million contract he signed last off-season, but the Colts paid almost $12 million of that sum in the deal's first year. Indianapolis may have moved on from Allen with Doyle's ascension, but the Patriots clearly have a use for him up in Foxborough. This is the second straight year the team has traded for a tight end, as they acquired Bennett via trade last offseason.

The Patriots will owe Allen $5 million in 2017, $5 million in 2018 and $7.4 million in 2019, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald.

Roughly 24 hours prior to the opening of free agency, the Patriots are making a major splash in the trade market.

At tight end, the Patriots also have Rob Housler under contract, and they tendered exclusive rights free agent Matt Lengel yesterday.

The Patriots newest tight end said in a statement that he's "humbled and excited" to be heading to New England. "I think he's one of the best blocking tight ends that we'll see". As long as Josh McDaniels is the offensive coordinator in New England, he'll want to use his two tight end sets to help make things easier for quarterback Tom Brady in the passing game.

It's unlikely this deal would have gone down if Ryan Grigson still was general manager of the Colts.
