Personal electronics banned on flights to the United States from 13 countries

Media reports quickly spread with rumors that the United States was about to announce a new set of security rules targeted at airlines flying routes between the U.S. and some African and Middle Eastern countries. Cell phones will still be allowed, but anything larger-including laptops, tablets, and cameras-must be put in checked baggage.

These changes are as a result of a security concern relating to passengers on non-stop flights from certain Middle Eastern countries, an unnamed U.S. official told CNN's Jon Ostrower.

In it, the TSA is said to have told the airlines that passengers traveling on flights to or from the United States should check any laptops, Kindles, iPads or similar devices into the hold. The Qatar Airways booking agent I talked to was clearly unaware of any potential electronics ban on her airline, for example.

A third USA official said there has been concern about attacks via electronics for some months, but there wasn't enough information to warrant an airline action before.




The airline tweeted and posted the announcement on Facebook. Of a dozen foreign airlines contacted Monday afternoon, Royal Jordanian was the only one to publicly detail such a prohibition on electronics.

Travel and Leisure noted concerns have been raised recently about lithium-ion batteries, citing a cellphone battery that caught fire on a Delta Airlines flight From Norfolk, Virginia, to Atlanta, and a passenger's headphones that exploded on a flight to Australia from Beijing.

Passengers could soon be prohibited from traveling with large electronic devices on some US-bound flights due to a ban that appears to be instituted by the USA government.

Royal Jordanian told CNN by Twitter message that "further updates will be announced soon". The edict was distributed by the US Transportation Safety Administration on Monday, with immediate effect, the Guardian reported.
