Police respond to Capitol Hill incident; shots fired

A woman is in custody after she tried to ram a police auto near the U.S. Capitol Wednesday morning, according to U.S. Capitol Police.

Police fired shots at the "dangerous" driver as she rode towards them not far from Capitol Hill on Wednesday, according to NBC.

A Washington D.C. police spokeswoman said there was a call of shots fired at 9:30 a.m. local time (1330GMT) on Independence Avenue, which runs along the south side of the U.S. Capitol.

As the officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver pulled a U-turn and fled the scene, apparently striking another vehicle and almost hitting officers.

Malecki said a brief pursuit followed until the vehicle was stopped in the area of Washington and Independence Avenues SW.

The Metropolitan Police Department earlier said the driver had apparently struck a police cruiser and tried running over several other officers.

CNN has reached out to Capitol Police but did not immediately receive a response.

Nearly exactly one year ago, U.S. Capitol Police shot a man after he pulled a weapon at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint as spring tourists thronged Washington.

As of now, the Capitol building is open to the public.

Capitol Police are investigating the incident, she said.

He said a line of police cars followed the auto as it passed his cab. She did not believe Everett meant to harm anyone.

Her family later said she had been suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis.
