Protests in Rotterdam over Turkish rally ban

Erdoğan calls Dutch 'Nazi remnants' after Turkish min. denied landing

Speaking at a rally in Istanbul, Erdoğan said of the Dutch government: "They do not know politics or global diplomacy ... these Nazi remnants, they are fascists", with the crowds booing in response.

Turkey said on Saturday it doesn't want the Netherlands ambassador to return "for some time" as relations quickly deteriorated between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies after the Dutch government barred Turkey's foreign minister from flying to the country. "These are the remains of Nazis, they are fascists", he added.

Earlier Saturday, Cavusoglu had warned that Turkey would impose "sanctions" on the Netherlands if his flight was canceled, according to local Turkish media.

Austria, Germany and the Netherlands have voiced displeasure that the Turkish referendum - over constitutional amendments created to consolidate President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's already formidable powers - was being debated within their borders.

Turkey is already embroiled in a row with Germany over a similar ban on rallies, which has chilled their bilateral ties to a new low.

The government said Cavusoglu's permissions were revoked due to "risks to public order and security", but Erdogan cited the move as an example of "fascist practices".

'The Dutch government does not have any opposition to gatherings in our country to inform them about it.

Rutte said that while the Netherlands and Turkey could search for "an acceptable solution", Turkey was not respecting the rules relating to public gatherings.

"You can cancel our foreign minister's flight as much as you want, but let's see how your flights come to Turkey now".

Erdogan is looking to the large number of emigre Turks living in Europe to help clinch victory in next month's referendum and give him sweeping new powers.

Mevlut Cavusoglu said he would travel to Rotterdam on Saturday despite "all obstacles and despite all the racist speeches".

The Netherlands was therefore withdrawing landing rights, he said.

A spokesman for the President lambasted the bans, claiming they revealed a "tragicomedy" on attitudes towards the Turkish government and interference in the referendum.

Erdogan also denounced Germany after Turkish leaders were prevented from rallying expats in several German cities in support of the referendum.
