Senators seek visitor logs from White House, Mar-a-Lago

President Trump has assembled a cabinet filled with millionaires and billionaires, he's pursuing an agenda of massive tax cuts for the rich, and the initiation fees at Mar-A-Lago - where people are getting uncommon access to the president and his top advisers - have just doubled to $200,000.

The MAR-A-LAGO Act comes in response to the Trump administration's refusal to extend the pro-transparency policy established by former President Barack Obama to release visitor logs at the White House 90 to 120 days after they were created.

President Donald Trump's trips to Mar-a-Lago will be scrutinized by a government watchdog to determine how classified information is kept secure at the Palm Beach, Florida, resort.

And it will investigate whether Trump's hotels are sending to the U.S. Treasury any profits from foreign government customers.

SinceTrump took office, the page of White House Records on whitehouse.gov has a message saying "This page is being updated".

During one such Mar-a-Lago getaway last month with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the two premiers were dining as news of North Korea's latest ballistic missile test broke.

The Democrats, citing press reports, said each of Trump's weekend trips to his Florida estate costs about $3 million.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) will also be checking whether guests at Mar-a-Lago are subject to security screenings, and evaluate the expenses incurred by government employees traveling to the "Winter White House".

New Mexico senator Tom Udall is behind the bill, and said that by refusing to release the White House visit logs Trump is "only validating the rampant concerns about who may be pulling the levers in his administration". Rep. Mike Quigley, an Illinois Democrat, introduced the same legislation in the House.

According to Politico, current protocol dictates that club members call the front desk to provide the names of their personal guests, but they don't have to give details - like social security numbers or birthdates - that are typically required for White House visitor logs and background checks.

Sens. Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed have introduced the "Making Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness Act", or Mar-a-Lago Act.
