Sessions encourages cities to revive 1990s crime strategies

CNN Tonight	3/16/17	1:04

Sessions conceded that his antiquated views on marijuana might be "unfashionable" on Wednesday, but insisted that "our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life". But too many lives are at stake to worry about being fashionable. "We need to say, as Nancy Reagan said, 'just say no'". "But we're beginning to see an increase again".

Two days before he dismissed them, Attorney General Jeff Sessions gave no indication in a conference call with U.S. attorneys across the country that some oftheir jobs were in peril, one of the dismissed United States attorneys told CNN on Monday. Meanwhile, recent rises in opioid overdoses have driven a startling spike in drug-related deaths.

Sessions' Justice Department, which contains the Drug Enforcement Administration, technically classifies marijuana and heroin at the same level of restriction; they are both now Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. A 2014 report in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found states that offered legal medical marijuana programs had a 24.8 percent lower opioid overdose mortality rate compared to states that had not legalized some form of cannabis. "But at the same time, we also stand in solidarity with the various people who are very threatened by this administration".

"In the "80s and '90s, we saw how campaigns stressing prevention brought down drug use and addiction". Sessions' own home state of Alabama recently allowed the use of some marijuana-derived products for the treatment of individuals with debilitating conditions.

Specifics of a program to educate Americans on the dangers of drugs and addiction weren't laid out on Wednesday.

Other topics Sessions discussed during his speech included introducing a Justice Department task force on crime reduction and public safety, and stepping up prosecution for gun crimes and drug users. The Justice Department asked this week for more time to turn over to the House Intelligence Committee any information that might back up the allegation that former president Obama spied on Trump during the campaign.

On racial disparities, Sessions said law enforcement has "to be so sensitive to those issues", but added, "When you fight crime you have to fight it where it is. There is no excuse for this", Sessions said.
