Spiders could eat every human on earth in just 1 year

Even if you were to account for the approximately 880 million people the world has added since 2005, about 13.5%, total human biomass would still be around 400 million tons, meaning that if spiders were to switch to a diet comprised of exclusively humans, they'd probably still be looking for another meal.

An entomological survey of North Carolina homes turned up spiders in 100 percent of them. Larger species of spiders are also known to chow down on frogs, lizards, snakes, fish, birds and bats.

We stumbled across this info in a Washington Post article by Christopher Ingraham in which the author noted "spiders could eat all of us and still be hungry".

What about you, do you love or hate spiders?

Spiders are quite literally all around us. Most of what they consume - about 90 percent - is insects, and because of it they have a huge ecological impact. Researchers Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer actually estimate that there are so many spiders on the planet, that they could consume between 400 million and 800 million tons of prey in one single year.

Theoretically that means that if the spiders ever chose to form a spider army and attacked humanity they could eat all seven billion of us - if we just sat there and let them eat us that is.

The total collective biomass of all grown-up humans on Planet Earth is estimated to be somewhere around 287 million tons.

Most spiders, of which there are some 45,000 species, are found in forests, grasslands and shrublands, followed by croplands, deserts, urban areas and tundra areas. If we recall, one Titanic weighed around 47,000 tons.

So yes, there are a lot of spiders out there, and they eat an astonishing amount of food every year. Their food is weighing more than the total weight of humanity. The mass of every spider on Earth today, in other words, is equivalent to 478 Titanics.

We fret about the number of spiders we consume in our sleep, yet have you ever stopped to think about how many of us they could consume?

Further facts tell that the spiders eat 10 % of their body weight meat per day. That's about equivalent to a 200-pound man eating 20 pounds of meat each day, which sounds like an average day for The Rock. Since they primarily feast on bugs, their hunger means fewer pests in the garden, fewer mosquitoes in the yard and fewer flies in the house.
