Syrian children suffered the worst war-related violations in 2016

UNICEF said there are 2.8 million children living in hard-to-reach areas including 280,000 living under siege

The suffering of children in war-torn Syria "hit rock bottom" in 2016 with the highest number of grave violations against them since verification began in 2014, underscored the United Nations children's agency urging all parties to the conflict, those who have influence over them, and anyone who cared about children to find an immediate political solution to end the conflict.

The conflict Syria enters its sixth year this Wednesday and there seems to be no relief in sight for the youngest victims of this protracted civil war.

More than 850 children were recruited to fight in the conflict in 2016 - over double the number recruited the year before.

At least 652 children died in the last 12 months, a 20% increase on 2015, the organization said in a damning new report published Monday.

Entlitled, "Hitting Rock Bottom" the report details a dramatic rise in violence against Syrian children, as well as increasing risks of them being used as child soldiers.

There were 87 attacks on schools or education personnel past year, and 225 children were killed at or near school. Children are recruited as fighters on the frontline, and in the previous year increasingly as executioners, suicide bombers or prison guards.

Mr Geert added: "Each and every child is scarred for life with horrific consequences on their health, well-being, and future".

UNICEF warned that social and medical services are continuing to deteriorate, forcing many children into "child labor, early marriage, and combat".

"Millions of children in Syria come under attack on a daily basis, their lives turned upside down".

"Over the previous year in Syria, all parties involved have blocked vital aid supplies and millions have become poorer, hungrier and more isolated from assistance and from the world", said NRC's Mideast director, Carsten Hansen, according to The Associated Press.

As the war enters its seventh year, UNICEF is pushing for sustained access to all of the nearly six million children dependent on humanitarian aid.

"I am very sad about them and wish they were with me because we would play together by right now". In 2016, 12,600 school children crossed unsafe conflict lines, many traveling for days, so that they could take their final exams.
