Similar criticisms were leveled at the Women's March for being a movement that appealed to people in positions of privilege. The strike was not without its detractors though, with some noting that the numbers participating were far fewer than the January 21 women's march, and others pointing out that only women of privilege could afford to take time off work.

The movement, which coincides with International Women's Day, seeks to show the vital role women play in both the USA and global economy. And grassroots activists are trying to harness the energy generated by the historically popular Women's March towards a general strike called A Day Without a Woman.

What is the International Women's Strike?

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel noted that the women participating in today's demonstrations do not represent the views of all women. There were plenty of women-privileged and unprivileged, and salaried, wage, and at-home workers-who did take the day off. Some folks showed solidarity while working by wearing red and/or donating to organizations that support women. "In the United States, what should be human rights are instead considered benefits and perks associated with the tech elite and corporate class". If we estimate that at least half of these are women, that's roughly 30 women a day that lose their lives to abortion.

Rep. Lois Frankel (D-Fla.), the chairwoman of the Democratic Women's Working Group, said in a statement that female lawmakers will leave shortly after they deliver speeches on the House floor in support of A Day Without A Woman.

The objective of the "Day Without a Woman" strike is to promote "economic solidarity" by encouraging women to abstain from work and avoid shopping, except at businesses owned by women and minorities.

Members of the Congressional Black Caucus explained why they also wore black flowers with red.

.

Yes. Men are being asked to help with caregiving and other domestic chores on Wednesday. According to the Center for American Progress, a full strike of all paid working women in the USA would have resulted in a $21 billion loss in the GDP with the state of California losing the most. "We strike for you", the website reads. And that's not even including the losses that would be due to womens' striking from the unpaid labor they do for their families.

Can businesses have a role?

"We're all taking a day off to say the status of women in 2017 is unacceptable", said Chelsey Shields, Executive Director of Utah Women Unite.

Are there any rallies you can attend? There are also rallies planned for New York; San Francisco; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Washington, D.C.; Ann Arbor, Michigan; St. Petersburg, Florida; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Portland, Oregon, according to USA Today. Some colleges, such as Rutgers University in New Jersey, are also staging walkouts and marches.
