Top US attorney Bharara 'fired'

Lawmakers demand evidence of wiretap claim

As the chief federal prosecutor for the Southern District of New York, Mr Bharara oversaw notable corruption and white-collar criminal cases, as well as terrorism cases.

Whenever there's a change in presidential administration, he said, "I think it would be unwise not to be ready".

Sources told Sherman that prosecutors "have been offering witnesses immunity to testify before a federal grand jury that's already been impaneled". In a statement later in the day, Bharara said, "One hallmark of justice is absolute independence, and that was my touchstone every day that I served".

At the time, Reno stated she asked for their resignations "so that the USA attorneys presently in position will know where they stand and so that we can begin to build a team that represents a Department of Justice that represents my views and the views of President Clinton", as reported by The Sun-Sentinel.

He got fired on Saturday after refusing to turn in his resignation, after Attorney General Jeff Sessions requested all 46 remaining Obama-appointed USA attorneys resign. Although he has his fans in the NY legal community, I remember when he subpoenaed Reason Magazine for the names of commenters who had made over-the-top (but not actionable) comments about a federal judge Bharara practiced before - and then banned Reason from publicizing the subpoena by subjecting them to a gag order.

On Sunday, some Democrats condemned the demand for resignations in highly partisan comments. Each are supervised by the US attorney general.

During his appearance on ABC's "This Week", Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, said he found it suspicious how in November President Donald Trump summoned Bharara to Trump Tower to discuss his future in the new administration and then suddenly altered his mind.

In fact, Sessions himself was among those 93 US attorneys who were fired by Reno.

There are 93 Senate-confirmed USA attorneys appointed by the president.

"I guess that's why Trump fired him", Warren added. Cuomo was criticized for disbanding the Moreland Commission.

Bharara announced that Joon H. Kim, the current deputy U.S. attorney, will serve in his place.

Before the firing, one of New York's top elected Republicans voiced support for Bharara.

A spokesman for the US attorney's office said Bharara wasn't saying what he meant by his Moreland Commission reference.

And, to be fair, that's been my opinion of Bharara for some time.

But Mr Bharara was a unique case: the Indian-born prosecutor known for his toughness and for remaining untethered to politics or party had been assured by the president-elect that he could keep his job.

Giving an explanation for the call, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the "president reached out to Preet Bharara on Thursday to thank him for his service and to wish him good luck".

In circumstances as such, it is pertinent to note the conflict of interest that shall arise if Mukasey exceeds to the U.S. attorney office.

The replacement of most, if not all, serving USA attorneys is quite customary at the start of every new administration.
