Trump to review Obama-era fuel efficiency standards

Donald Trump

The new administration's move, which had been sought by the large auto manufacturers, coincides with a visit by the president to MI to meet industry executives and workers.

Hundreds of GM, Ford and Fiat-Chrysler workers have been invited to attend Trump's talk near the American Center for Mobility at Willow Run.

Trump said revising fuel economy targets could help keep and protect U.S auto industry jobs. We are going to be fair. Take for example, the Trump administration's announcement that it is open to rolling back President Obama's fuel efficiency standards for cars.

"It's like the full monte, ' one auto industry official told DailyMail.com".

The review, which automakers have been seeking from the Trump administration for many weeks, opens the door to lower fuel economy requirements and less stringent controls on carbon dioxide emissions. The EPA will then restart a review of the fuel efficiency rules that is expected to be complete in 2018.

"These standards are costly for automakers and the American people", said EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt. "We will work with our partners at DOT to take a fresh look to determine if this approach is realistic".

Trump knocked President Obama for an "11th hour executive action" putting stricter measures on federal fuel-efficiency standards.

Trump's announcement, the Associated Press writes, would put the "midterm review back on track so that officials can spend another year studying the issue before setting new standards in 2018". "Our industry is committed to producing even safer and more energy-efficient vehicles in the future and that's what this process is all about". Back in 2012, Peter Kent, the environment minister in the Conservative government of the time, unveiled new rules aimed at cutting emissions and fuel consumption after the USA government finalized its own standards.

Setting up a potential conflict with California officials over air pollution and climate change, the Trump administration began the process Wednesday of rolling back rules created to limit emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from automobiles.

"We love them, too", he said.

And Mark Tercek, president and CEO of the Nature Conservancy, called on automakers to meet the Obama-era rules.

"This move is a tragic failure", the MI to Believe In group said.

Recently the three largest automakers in North America said they won't waver in their collective bargaining commitments to invest $1.5 billion in total in their Canadian operations.

A senior White House official told reporters Tuesday that the review of the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) greenhouse gas standards would fulfill a promise Obama made in 2012 to the industry. The company was joined by Korean vehicle manufacturers Hyundai and Kia in unveiling plans to invest $3 billion in the United States in the next five years.

"It's a great business, but it's been pretty well hurt here", Trump said Wednesday.
