Uber suspends self-driving car program in 2 states

The auto - a Volvo SUV - was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash, on Friday, Uber said.

SAN FRANCISCO- Uber's self-driving cars are back on the road, following a weekend crash in Tempe, Ariz. that grounded test cars in Pittsburgh and Arizona.

Multiple automakers and technology companies are testing fleets of self-driving vehicles.

Uber's self-driving cars always have a human in the driving seat who can take over the controls.

The company launched self-driving cars onto the streets of Pittsburgh in September 2016, which represented the first time such a service has been launched in the U.S.

An investigation found no safety-related defects with the autopilot system, but concluded that the driver may have had time to avert the crash if he had been paying closer attention. The cars were seen driving through red lights.

The difference between the California programme and those in Arizona and Pennsylvania was that California barred passengers from riding in the vehicles. That would be a contrast to the incidents involving self-driving cars tested by Waymo. Local authorities revealed on Sunday that all of the blame for the crash falls on the other driver, adding that no one was seriously injured in the accident. Police said another auto - driven by a flawed human (for we all have flaws, every one of us) - was responsible for the accident.

Last week, Uber President Jeff Jones said he was quitting after six months on the job. None of the GM cars have been involved in accidents, said Kevin Kelly, the company's spokesman for advanced technology projects. The San Francisco-based ride-hailing company is also now suffering through a number of scandals that led to some high-profile departures including its former Vice President of Mapping Amit Singhal, as well as its President Jeff Jones who will soon be leaving the firm.

After a auto crash involving one of Uber's self-driving Volvo vehicles occurred in Tempe, Arizona, the company temporarily halted self-driving tests in Pittsburgh and Arizona in light of an ensuing investigation. At the time of the crash, the Uber vehicle was in autonomous mode. When the Department of Motor vehicles revoked the robot cars' registrations, Uber moved them to Arizona, where there are no testing regulations.
