United Kingdom minister tells lawmakers not to delay Brexit

Prime Minister Theresa May, who will trigger the formal divorce process by the end of this month, has said she would be prepared to walk away from negotiations without an agreement because "no deal is better than a bad deal".

With British Prime Minister Theresa May now free to trigger article 50, Guy Verhofstadt insisted that MEPs must have their say if a deal between the bloc and Britain is to be reached.

The pound took a beating yesterday, falling to an eight-week low against the dollar and a basket of currencies, hit by fears of a prolonged bout of political jousting over the terms of Britain's exit from the EU.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Commons vote, the heads of 35 Oxford University colleges are pleading with MPs to allow European Union citizens the right to stay after Brexit.

The referendum also brought the resignation of former Prime Minister David Cameron, who during a re-election campaign had promised to hold the vote.

May cleared the last major hurdle to Brexit on Monday, when parliament rejected the amendments from the House of Lords and voted to approve the trigger to Article 50.

"We have heard, regrettably, that the Commons has not heard the vote in this house", she said.

May would then be allowed to trigger Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, which allows any European Union member to leave the organization unilaterally.

May told MPs on Tuesday that the Brexit bill will be signed by the Crown Office in the next few days and then announced to both houses of Parliament in order to officially complete its passage into legislation.

She said May had failed to engage with her call for Scotland to remain in the European single market after Brexit, and that Scotland risked being taken out of the EU against its will. The EU's Court of Auditors will determine the amount of the bill on the EU side towards the end of the two-year negotiations.

But after Britain's vote to leave the European Union as the referendum deepened geographical and social divisions, she will now be forced to seek a deal that defuses threats by Scottish and Irish nationalists calling for independence votes.

"Most fundamentally, the United Kingdom will not be in full control of the negotiating agenda, and specifically the order in which issues will be addressed", said James McCormack, global head of sovereigns at Fitch Ratings, in a blog post about the Brexit challenges he foresees for Britain.

United Kingdom parliamentarians are expected to reject the two House of Lords amendments to the so-called Brexit Bill later on Monday.

She could, in theory, do it as soon as Tuesday.

"The simple truth is this - deal or no deal, vote or no vote, positive vote or negative vote, this process is irreversible", Conservative legislator Edward Leigh said.

He warned that calls for a parliamentary vote on the deal could be interpreted as an attempt by MPs or peers to defy the will of the British people.
