White Sox Sign Tim Anderson to Record Deal

David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports

The sides have agreed to a six-year extension that's worth $25 million, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported Tuesday morning.

Anderson would have been eligible for free agency in 2022, so the contract gives the White Sox two more years of control. The previous record was held by Chris Archer of the Tampa Bay Rays, who signed a contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Signing Anderson to a long-term deal would signal that the White Sox want to make Anderson, their top pick in the 2013 draft, the face of the franchise during this rebuild.

Anderson, 23, has a.333 batting average in spring training but missed a third consecutive game on Monday to handle what he labeled "personal problems". While he may decline in offensive production this season while he figures things out at the plate, Anderson is a proven commodity on the field and could anchor the defense of Chicago's infield. He topped out as the No. 19 overall prospect according to Baseball Prospectus prior to the start of last season. He did not disappoint upon making his major league debut on June 10 past year, hitting.283 with 37 extra base hits (nine home runs, 22 doubles), 57 runs scored, 30 RBI and 10 stolen bases over 99 games (410 at-bats).

In his second season in the big leagues, Anderson may begin to utilize his speed on the base paths a bit more.
