5 things to know about April the giraffe and her calf

The 15-year-old giraffe delivered her calf shortly before 10 a.m. EDT in an enclosed pen at the zoo in rural Harpursville. April has her own website and even a clothing line. Animal Adventure has not announced a height and weight for April's calf. Animal Adventure's owner, Jordan Patch, has described the global attention as "overwhelming" for him and his four-member staff, who also care for 200 other animals.

Giraffes are in labor for about 15 months and give birth while standing.

Many have watched the pregnant giraffe through different live streams provided by numerous feeds throughout the Internet, including the CBSDFW Facebook page.

The calf's father is Oliver, a five-year-old giraffe kept in the same petting zoo. People around the world have been tuning in daily, with some growing impatient as the pregnancy seemed to drag on. According to KYMX News, when Mazuri's contract expired, Animal Adventure Park was scrambling to find a new sponsor. The zoo plans to hold a contest to name the baby.

April's baby is a precious little boy, though he doesn't have a name yet.

A zoo spokesperson says the delivery could take all day Saturday.

The YouTube livestream shows more than 600,000 were watching the blessed event on Saturday morning.

Since February, the live feed provided by AAP attracted millions across the USA and in many parts of the world.

While the calf's weight is now unknown, zoo officials said they weigh around 150 pounds and are about 6-feet tall at birth. After the baby has naturally weaned, the calf will eventually be moved to a new facility to begin a breeding program at that new facility.
