6755 postal workers were attacked by dogs last year

Denver residents love their dogs, but those family pets can menace others if they aren't restrained - a fact the U.S. Postal Service is stressing in advance of National Dog Bite Prevention week.

The top three cities with the most attacks were Los Angeles (80), Houston (62) and Cleveland (60).

San Diego's numbers are a slight improvement over 2015, when the city ranked second in the nation with 58 attacks. Fresno is 30th with 19 incidents reported past year. Dogs have been known to burst through screen doors or plate-glass windows to get at carriers.

Put your dog in a separate room behind a closed door before opening your front door to receive packages or mail.

"The dog may view the letter carrier handing the mail to the family member as a threatening gesture", she explains. "Any dog can bite and all attacks are preventable through responsible pet ownership".

Overall, an estimated 4.5 million Americans are bitten by dogs annually, mostly children. The week is meant to educate people on how to prevent dog attacks.

Also, owners should remind children about keeping dogs secure. Booming online retail sales are good news for the U.S. Postal Service, but its carriers are incurring. I couldn't find any good data on the number of dogs per capita in US cities, but Match.com found that dog lovers were more common in Colorado than any other state.

The nationwide number of dog attacks rose since last year - up to 6,755, an increase of more than 200 over the previous year. The package pickup application at usps.com urges customers to indicate if they have dogs when they schedule package pickups.

For more information, visit USPS. If the dog is roaming the neighborhood, the pet owner's neighbors also may be asked to pick up their mail at the area's post office. "I would see eagles, not dogs, taking out drones". The system can even tell a carrier when a dog has gotten loose, and, therefore, could pose a threat.
