Adityanath slams rivals' silence on triple talaq

Referring to an episode in Mahabharata where a key character Draupadi was disrobed in front of several people, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh said: "These days there is a new debate in the country".

Mr. Adityanath suggested that those who were maintaining a silence over the "raging issue" of triple talaq were as much at fault as the Muslim men who divorce their wives arbitrarily using triple talaq. "This reminds me of Draupadi being disrobed in an assembly and she asks a question to the gathering as to who is responsible for this?"

"No one uttered even a single word. Some are silent on the issue", Yogi Adityanath said making a veiled reference to Triple Talaq at the launch of a book on former prime minister Chandrashekhar.

Earlier on Monday, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plea for a complete ban on triple talaq echoed sentiments of lakh of Muslim women, who have been running from pillar to post seeking justice and an end to the menace.

He also condemned those who were against the common civil code in India - a common set of personal laws for all citizens of the country, irrespective of their religion.

"We do not want that there is conflict within the Muslim community over this issue".

Mr. Adityanath also used the occasion to pitch for a Uniform Civil Code.

His comments came at a time the Supreme Court is hearing petitions challenging the practice of triple talaq and the Muslim Personal Law Board is of the opinion that the judiciary has nothing to do with the issue.

AIMPLB general secretary Maulana Wali Rehmani had yesterday said that the board had chose to issue a code of conduct and warned that those who give "talaq" (divorce) without following the "Sharia" (Islamic law) will face social boycott. "Triple talaq has been done away with Islamic countries as well". Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said that such an article shows how much respect the UP CM has for women.

"We need to end such bad practices by awakening the society", the prime minister said.

Interestingly, some renowned Hanafi scholars have also ruled against concurrent or triple talaq.

"Watching a crime being committed is also a crime and there should be stringent laws to deal with criminal elements", she said.
