April Kicks Off With Wintry Mix of Snow and Sleet

National Weather Service

The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to continue until early evening in many areas of southern New England.

The Steamship Authority canceled some ferries traveling between Hyannis and Nantucket from 6:30 a.m. through 1:45 p.m. departures Saturday due to the weather.

An inch of snow accumulated in Boston overnight, but as temperatures rose and precipitation changed over to rain, only a coating of slush was left by sunrise.

"Slushy accumulation" is what Colorado Springs can expect, "with city roads remaining mainly wet", according to a tweet from Brain Bledsoe, chief meteorologist for Gazette news partner KKTV.

Quiet weather returns by Sunday into Monday before additional chances of rain and snow arrive by the middle of next week.

Sleet and freezing rain is also possible and about two inches in rainfall may occur in the Northeast causing potential for a patchy accumulation of ice. "Locally heavier snow is possible just north of town, but not excessively so".

High winds were expected on Cape Cod, with a warning issued for Hyannis and Nantucket through the evening.

Main Impact: Travel may become hard with snow covered and snow packed roads. Freezing rain could be an issue over northern Worcester County and into Franklin County.

Almost eight inches of snow fell on May 7, 1989.

Rain and snow before midnight, then rain and sleet between midnight and 1am, then rain after 1am. "Snowfall rates could be over 1" per hour at times.

Rain will change back to snow from north to south before tapering off Saturday afternoon.

Friday night and Saturday morning ski traffic will be impacted between Golden and Vail Pass. "It's going to be ongoing through about 4 p.m".

Sunday's the victor, with a high of 57 degrees and mostly sunny skies, Storm Team 4 says. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
