At UN, US tells Russia it's isolating itself by backing Assad

Russia and the United States have a shared understanding that USA air strikes on Syria should not be repeated, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his Syrian counterpart Walid al-Moualem in Moscow on Thursday, April 13, Reuters reports citing Interfax news agency.

"I felt we had to do something about it".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed there were many problems, but stressed that Moscow was "open to dialogue with the USA in all different areas".

Putin accused Assad's opponents of planning to stage chemical attacks to be blamed on Damascus in order to lure the United States deeper into the conflict.

In a positive development, Russian Federation agreed to consider reopening lines of communication over movements across Syrian airspace, an arrangement that had been cancelled by Moscow in retaliation for last week's missile air strikes by the USA in Syrian air space.

On Wednesday Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding a swift investigation into a chemical weapons attack in Syria, challenging claims that Assad was behind the chemical attack. He noted a shared vision of an "uncompromising" war on terrorism.

But neither side cited concrete avenues of cooperation, beyond establishing a working group to address what Tillerson called "smaller issues".

It has now become evident that President Trump is not the ally Russian Federation was hoping for, but he is rather the president who launched a military strike against Assad.

"Russia once again has chosen to side with Assad, even as the rest of the world, including the Arab world, overwhelmingly comes together to condemn this murderous regime", Haley told the 15-member Security Council. "We'll see what happens".

Syria's government has denied responsibility for the gas attack in a rebel-held area of northern Syria that killed at least 87 people, many of them children.

Russia, one of Syria's few global allies, vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution which would require the regime to provide detailed information about air operations and immediate access to air bases.

"It would be a fantastic thing" if the two nations got along better, Trump said, but cautioned that "it may be just the opposite".

Washington's conclusions rely on satellite imagery, laboratory analysis of physiological samples from victims and a "significant body of open source reporting" that the report says could not have been fabricated.

Russia, in turn, is concerned about Nato's presence in eastern Europe along its border.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who arrived at the head of a diplomatic delegation in Moscow on Friday morning and met with Syrian FM Walid Muallem first, met with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov afterward. Western leaders backed the US action, saying Assad had brought it on himself.

As it stands, Putin will not allow any more embarrassments in Syria.
