Barcelona reacts to FIFA's four match ban on Lionel Messi

Messi was hit with a four-match global ban this week after directing a tirade of abuse at an assistant following Argentina's 1-0 win over Chile last Thursday, in an incident that appeared out of character for the five-time world player of the year.

Argentina could miss out on qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, considering how dependent they are on Messi.

In this March 23, 2017 photo, Argentina's Lionel Messi reacts after missing a chance to score during a World Cup qualifying match against Chile in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"The first thing that surprised me was that Messi loses control - he never loses his tranquillity", Valdano said in quotes reported by Marca.

"The club considers the sanction of four games imposed against Messi unfair and totally disproportionate".

"Finally, FC Barcelona wishes to reiterate its support for Leo Messi, an exemplary player in terms of conduct both on and off the pitch".

"We are alive and we want to qualify for the World Cup".

Argentina captain Lionel Messi picked up a four-match worldwide suspension, and Barcelona leapt to his defence with a strongly-worded statement to Federation Internationale de Football Association. Argentina dropped from third to fifth, remaining on 22 points with four games to play and putting coach Edgardo Bauza under intense pressure to step aside. The coach also said "it is strange" that Messi's ban was decided so quickly.

The 29-year-old is not permitted to compete for Argentina during the length of the suspension after he allegedly directed an expletive-ridden rant at a match official.

The top four qualify directly for the World Cup in Russian Federation next year and the fifth-placed side go into a playoff against a team from Oceania for another place in the global show-piece event.

"Cesar Luis Menotti once said that when a player makes a mistake, they should not be forbidden to play but should do social work or something like that instead". But whether he said it to the referee or to the air, four games, one of which-a 2-0 loss to Bolivia-he has already missed, is an excessive punishment.

Messi and the Argentine soccer federation can appeal against the ban to FIFA. Messi wasn't even carded for the blowup at the time-it was only after the match that the incident was brought to FIFA's attention, by, wait for it, Argentina's CONMEBOL rival, Chile.
