Birthday boy Judge, Severino carry Yankees past Red Sox, 3-1

He lost his last time out, but pitched a career-high eight innings, struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter while allowing two home runs to the Chicago White Sox.

Fans had to wait one extra day, but one of the greatest rivalries in professional sports history resumes Wednesday when the Boston Red Sox host the New York Yankees in the opener of a rain-shortened two-game set and the first of 19 renewals this season.

Reigning AL Cy Young victor Rick Porcello lost his third straight start, giving up three runs - two earned - in 6 2/3 innings.

Quintana earned his first win of the season after allowing only one earned run and scattering five hits over six innings. Severino threw another two scoreless innings, and finished with three hits, two walks and six strikeouts in his seven innings. "I saw a ball I could get to and trying to do everything I can to catch it", Judge said.

The fun continued for Judge in the bottom of the third when he went barreling into the right field stands in foul territory chasing a fly ball.

Judge landed on an empty seat, and manager Joe Girardi said he expected Judge would be a little sore this morning, but the 6-foot-7, 280-pound slugger didn't complain of any pains.

"I honestly didn't think about it".

Yankees: Girardi said SS Didi Gregorius is close to returning. Pedroia was injured on a controversial slide by Baltimore 3B Manny Machado on Friday. The Sox took three out of four games in the Bronx during the final week of the season and delayed the Yankees' wild-card-clinching party.

Lance McCullers (2-1) gave up five runs in five innings (see full recap).

For the most part, this was a relatively good game for the Yankees. It's still early, after all, and far too early to get caught up in the Yankees' majors-leading plus-32 run differential and declare them the second coming of New York's 1996 dynasty starters.

The Yankees opened the scoring in the second inning.

Weather permitting, Thursday night's pitching matchup will feature two aces, with Masahiro Tanaka going for the Yankees and Chris Sale for the Red Sox.

Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand.

Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk.
