Bradley out of starting lineup for Red Sox, has MRI on knee

Boston Red Sox center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. takes the field for the start of their baseball Home Opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Fenway Park Monday

Jackie Bradley Jr. says he's hopeful he can avoid the disabled list after missing Boston's game at Detroit on Sunday because of an injured right knee. Bradley tripped and fell rounding first base but was able to walk off under his own power after falling down.

The Sox do not anticipate Bradley being out for a long term. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said before Monday's series finale that he didn't think the injury was anything of "major outcome", but the club obviously wants to be careful so that the ailment doesn't become a long-term issue. He was sent back to Boston for further evaluation and placed on the disabled list following the game on Monday.

Jackie Bradley Jr. will go on the DL. After undergoing an MRI on Sunday, it was revealed that he suffered a sprained ligament in his knee. Farrell said the team was waiting for the images to be reviewed. "I feel a lot better".

"Everything points in that direction right now", Farrell said. But the plans changed when Bradley's knee stiffened and swelled up overnight.

The good news is the injuries that have plagued the Red Sox early this season haven't been serious.

With Bradley out of the lineup on Monday, Farrell opted to move Andrew Benintendi to center field. Chris Young will fill in while Bradley is out. Designated hitter/first baseman Hanley Ramirez remains in Boston with the flu and likely won't rejoin the team until Tuesday at Fenway Park.
