China warns 'conflict could break out at any moment' over N Korea

South Korean and US intelligence officials are trying to determine what type of missile was used Sunday

Wang was speaking at a joint media briefing with visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault.

Wang's comments appeared shortly after North Korea's vice foreign minister accused the USA of stoking tensions in the region.

"Lately, tensions have risen with the USA and the ROK on one side, and the DPRK on the other, and one has the feeling that a conflict could break out at any moment", Wang said, using abbreviations for South and North Korea.

Earlier Friday, North Korea's Vice Minister Han Song Ryol told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that his country will keep building up its nuclear arsenal in "quality and quantity" and said Pyongyang is ready to go to war if that's what President Donald Trump wants.

Yi said that if a war occurs, everyone will lose.

The United States has sent the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier group to waters near the Korean Peninsula in what it called a "reaction to provocations" from recent missile tests.

The US military on Thursday dropped the biggest non-nuclear bomb it possesses on Afghanistan, targeting a complex used by the Islamic State group.

Trump has repeatedly said he will prevent Pyongyang from its goal of developing a nuclear-tipped ballistic missile capable of reaching the mainland United States. While the hermit kingdom is thought to be in the final stages of conducting its sixth nuclear test, there is also speculation that Washington would not hesitate to use military force to quell North Korea's ambitious weapons programmes.

Amid increasing tensions with the threat of a possible nuclear test by North Korea on the peninsula, Wang urged all parties not to let things evolve into an irreversible and uncontrollable situation.

China, a key trading partner and a staunch geopolitical ally of North Korea, is becoming increasingly frustrated by North Korea's defiant actions.

The warnings came ahead of the birth anniversary celebrations of Kim Il-sung, the founder of North Korea, which are scheduled to be held in Pyongyang this weekend.

But there are few good diplomatic or economic options for the Trump administration.
