Cillizza: Trump just keeps creating smokescreens to mask his Russian Federation problem

But Flynn's lawyer has said that Flynn would only testify with a promise of immunity from prosecution - something no one has agreed to yet.

The plot continues to thicken around the White House's attempt to cover up their coordination with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA) to leak classified information, and otherwise obstruct that committee's investigation of the Trump administration.

"Let's be clear: Flynn's immunity request very strongly suggests there was a criminal conspiracy at the highest levels of government", said Seth Abramson, an attorney, academic and journalist.

In a financial disclosure form signed by Flynn on March 31, the former White House official listed speaking engagements to Russian entities, including the government-funded Russia Today television network and Volga-Dnepr Airlines. "They need to be shared with both full committees", he said, referring to the House and Senate intelligence committees, which are both investigating possible ties between Russian Federation and associates of President Trump. Schiff asked. "If these were produced either for or by the White House, then why all the subterfuge?"

Last week's bumpy ride for Nunes ended in reports that two top White House staffers coordinated the release of information to him.

"I am pleased to see the Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator Warner and Senator Burr working closely together", McCain said. I think that's really what's going on.

Flynn, who was sacked by President Trump on February 13 for misleading Vice President Mike Pence on the nature of his contacts with Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, filed his initial required disclosure form just two days before his exit from the White House.

Yet as the investigations continue into Trumpworld's Russian Federation connections, the White House has replaced these friendly soundings with a sober, decidedly hawkish stance.

Schiff's indication on CNN's "State of the Union" with Jake Tapper that he might oppose an immunity deal for the former adviser to President Donald Trump's campaign in exchange for testimony related to the committee's investigation into Russian interference in the U.S. election came days after Flynn's lawyer said his client "has a story to tell" but wanted "assurances against unfair prosecution".

Nunes created a firestorm of controversy because he took the documents to the White House to "alert" Trump to the surveillance before sharing them with Schiff or any other committee members. "The question is, of course, why?"

"Sometimes I think this is a distraction from what we should be doing", Cornyn said on CBS' "Face the Nation".

Nunes brushed aside Schiff's accusations, saying it was just politics.

The Senate's second-ranking Republican, Sen.

Asked about Nunes's original claim, that some Trump campaign officials were improperly unmasked in intelligence documents, Schiff declined to comment.
