The newspaper said about 100 people were eating at Yard House's outdoor patio when the shooting began.

"Initially we thought it was an active shooter. but there was a Coral Gables police officer at the mall at the time who was able to quickly determine it was a targeted shooting", Zabaleta said.

The shooting started about 1 p.m., witnesses told WPLG. One person said she was waiting to see if she would be allowed back inside to retrieve her belongings. By 1:40 pm, police reported the area was safe and secured.

Before police came by and ordered the restaurant to be locked down, he said many people rushed out the back door, leaving cellphones and other personal possessions behind in the chaos.
