Death toll from Egypt church bombing rises to 21

Sixteen people including three police officers were killed in that attack, which the interior ministry said was caused by a suicide bomber who blew himself up when prevented from entering the church.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 per cent of Egypt's population of 85 million.

Reports coming in from Egypt indicate that at least 27 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in two blasts that occurred in Egyptian churches.

And on Sunday, the group claimed responsibilty for both bombings. However, the pope has been reported unhurt in the blast.

At least 21 people were killed and dozens more injured after a bomb went off at a Coptic Christian church in Egypt during a Palm Sunday service.

The president called for a National Defence Council meeting in response to the attack. Meanwhile, security forces have dismantled two explosive devices at Sidi Abdel Rahim Mosque in Tanta city.

In the previous bombing in Tanta, among the 22 dead as included in the tragic toll of victims the Egyptian Ministry of Health was as well the head of the Court of Tanta, Samuel George, writes Al-Ahram.

The two had reaffirmed their commitment to working together to fight radical groups such as the Islamic State group. ISIS had recently released a video vowing to increase their terror campaign against Christians in the region, describing them as "infidels" aiding the West against Muslims. Homes and churches have been burned.

"The attack will not undermine the resolve and true will of the Egyptian people to counter the forces of evil, but will only harden their determination to move forward on their trajectory to realize security, stability and comprehensive development", the statement said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks, which come a week before Coptic Easter and in the same month that Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Egypt.

Egypt's Copts are one of the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East and have long complained of discrimination and that the government does not do enough to protect them.

"So sad to hear of the terrorist attack in Egypt. U.S. strongly condemns", President Trump said in a tweeted statement.

The Copts were largely supportive of the military overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi, a senior Brotherhood figure, and incurred the wrath of many Islamists, who attacked churches and other Christian institutions after his ouster.
