Britain's Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip leave the Easter Sunday service in Windsor Castle

Similarly, scores of Christians in various churches at Tirunelveli offered special prayers during the Easter celebration.

Christians in Kerala on Sunday attended special prayers and services in churches on the occasion of Easter, marking the resurrection of Jesus Christ after crucifixion. Believers took out candlelight processions on Saturday midnight, celebrating the Resurrection. The ceremonies were held with readings from the Holy Bible and popular Easter hymns and songs.

At St Mary's Church, the special English service in the morning was led by Father Yeruva Bala Showreddy, which was attended by a huge crowd comprising women, children and the elderly.

More than one mass was held in prominent churches, for the benefit of people speaking English and Telugu.

"Many families have come to the UAE for Easter celebrations", he said, noting that relatives came to join him from their home in Kottayam, Kerala.

In New York, a few thousand people packed St. Patrick's Cathedral, where Cardinal Timothy Dolan told worshippers to remember that even though things may seem bleak at times, Easter brings the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, showing how "God has the last word".

Hundreds of members of the Christian community visited the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park to pay tribute to those who were martyred in suicide bombing inside the park on the eve of Easter during March 2016.

This practice is preceded by a 40-day long fast, "Lent", during which the Christians give away something very dear to them as a sacrifice for the good deeds of Lord Jesus.
