Farmer Community reacts to Trump's Executive Order for Agriculture

Perdue, 70 years old, grew up on a south Georgia dairy farm. Mr Trump has proposed a 21% cut in US Department of Agriculture (USDA) programmes and has harshly criticised some worldwide trade deals, saying they have killed American jobs. Tester told his colleagues he will hold the former governor of Georgia accountable to rural Montana families and encourage him to push back against the Administration's proposed budget cuts to rural infrastructure and the Farm Service Agency. "USDA has been without a leader for far too long, and this confirmation will allow forward progress on issues impacting our industry", observed Robert Guenther, SVP for public policy at Washington, D.C. -based United Fresh.

"I look forward to working with him to continue developing smart agricultural policies that support both Kentucky and our country". Ben Sasse wrote in a letter to Perdue Tuesday.

At the hearing, Mr Perdue said he would be a "tenacious advocate and fighter" for rural America when dealing with the White House and other agencies and noted a growing middle class around the world that is hungry for USA products.

State Sen. Scott Bennett, D-Champaign, serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee and said his farming constituents supported Trump, but there were some concerns "when you heard about some of the NAFTA changes, where they've been very good for the agriculture community in IL, when you heard that one of the biggest importers of USA grain, Mexico, would not be dealing with us but dealing with Brazil".

He worked as a veterinarian in North Carolina before returning to Georgia to be involved in agricultural and transportation businesses.

The National Corn Growers Association is "ready to partner with Secretary Perdue and the rest of the Administration to build a better farm economy", the organization said on its website. PCG President Johnie Reed, a cotton producer from Kress, TX, said, "We congratulate Secretary Perdue, and we know that he will hit the ground running, as he has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing agriculture and the cotton industry in particular".

Moore: One of the things that we're excited about is not only getting to talk to the President, but having Secretary Perdue in place to hear it firsthand from the folks.

"The list of issues facing our industry is long, but we stand ready to work with Secretary Perdue and his staff to ensure USA cattle producers are provided a fair and competitive marketplace", says the United States Cattlemen's Association.

USDA officials need to keep farmers at top of mind as they go about daily business, Perdue said. Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand of New York State was the only member of the Senate Agriculture Committee to vote against him. Senate Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer of NY and Dick Durbin of IL voted "yes".
