Flint, Michigan to replace 18000 lead-tainted pipes by 2020

MI and the city of Flint have agreed to replace thousands of home water lines under a sweeping deal to settle a lawsuit over lead-contaminated water in the troubled city.

The settlement will be presented to a federal judge in Detroit on Tuesday for approval.

This agreement is set to be made official before a court on Tuesday, finally giving some hope to the people who have dealt with so much during this awful ordeal.

The city of Flint, Michigan, has a plan to replace around 18,000 underground water pipes thanks to an agreement with the state.

The state has also agreed to set aside an additional US$10 million for unexpected extra expenses.

Bottles of drinking water sit in front of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder as he testifies before a House Oversight and government Reform hearing on "Examining Federal Administration of the Safe Drinking Water Act in Flint, Michigan, Part III" on Capitol Hill in Washington March 17. The state has handed out free water filters, which the city recommends residents use before drinking or cooking with Flint tap water. The city failed to properly treat the more contaminated water under the direction of the state Department of Environmental Quality, and the water corroded city pipes, leaching lead into the water. This is the most blatant example of environmental injustice happening in the country right now and we need to make sure that it doesn't go down the memory hole until the people of Flint have been made whole. But the river water wasn't treated to reduce corrosion. Despite complaints over water quality, residents were told the tap water was safe to drink. But in early 2014, with the city under the control of a state-appointed emergency manager, officials switched to Flint River water in an effort to cut costs. A court ruled to replace water lines by 2020 - but the damage has already been done.

Since then, 13 state and local officials have been charged criminally for their role in the water crisis. The state will provide bottled water, free filters, cartridges and water-testing kits at each of the centers.

The researchers from Virginia Tech said they found no detectable levels of lead in 57 percent of homes during the latest round of tests in the city.

"The higher standard of protection being offered for Flint residents is likely to be employed in some form for residents of other MI and USA cities in the near future", he says. Other aspects of the settlement include new water monitoring requirements and that the state maintains current Medicaid funding levels.

Residents who get new water lines will be urged to continue using a filter for six months.
