Georgia Driver Demetrius Hollins Had Earlier 'Encounter' With Fired Cop

Two police officers in Georgia were fired this week after a video surfaced that showed them hurting a man during an arrest.

Subsequently, the department announced it was firing McDonald's supervisor, Sergeant Michael Bongiovanni, after it said police discovered a second video taken from a different angle.

A Gwinnett County police officer has been fired after he was captured on video kicking a handcuffed man during a traffic stop, Atlanta news media outlets reported.

The Gwinnett County Police Department said Thursday afternoon that Master Police Officer Robert McDonald violated department policy and the law.

Demetrius Hollins had been stopped by police in the Lawrenceville area when he was stomped in the head by an officer.

"What I viewed on that video disturbed me", Gwinnett Police Chief Butch Ayers said at the press conference. "We do not tolerate actions that are not consistent with our core values or state law", a police statement said.

The department has opened a criminal investigation into the officers' behavior.

The Gwinnett County Police Department has described the revelations uncovered so far as "shocking".

"Based on what I know right now, I would anticipate there are going to be charges", Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said Thursday, before the video of Bongiovanni surfaced. "We want them to have to stand before a Gwinnett County judge in a courtroom full of Gwinnett County citizens, with their legs shackled and their hands cuffed behind their back". The officer who pulled him over, identified in the incident report as Bongiovanni, said Hollins "began to act strange" and started yelling, "I need to call my mom" and "You have to let me go".

The officer smelled marijuana and was unable to verify any information about the vehicle, so he ordered Hollins out of the auto. At one point, Hollins reached under a seat where officers later found a gun.

Another video of the episode was shared online just hours later from another cellphone, which allegedly shows 41-year-old Sgt. Michael F. Bongiovanni punching Hollins, a college student, in the face after he exits his vehicle with his hands in the air.

"It shouldn't have happened", Ayers said McDonald told him. It wasn't immediately clear whether either man had an attorney.

The seemingly low rate of discipline for officers over the use of excessive force is why Hollins' case has drawn the attention of the Black Lives Matter chapter for the Greater Atlanta area, activists said. After that McDonald came on the scene and stomped him in the face.

Hollins was released from jail on Thursday. But the officer who responded to the accident said in a letter to the department's safety review committee that it would have been very hard for McDonald to avoid the wreck.

Both officers did not respond immediately to CNN requests for comment.

"He start (ed) shoving me in my auto and telling me that I was never going to have a video, that I was never going to make the phone call to my mom", he said in the television interview.
