Gorsuch confirmed to Supreme Court. Conservatives: 'Thanks Harry Reid'

The Senate, which previous year refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee to the court, voted 54-45 to approve Republican Trump's pick, Colorado-based federal appeals court judge Neil Gorsuch, to the lifetime job.

President Trump should be applauded for carrying through on his promise to appoint good judges from this list, and conservatives hope he continues to use the list for any future appointments.

Vice President Mike Pence presides over the roll call vote confirming Judge Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court.

Three Democratic senators up for re-election in 2018 in states won by Trump previous year - Indiana's Joe Donnelly, West Virginia's Joe Manchin and North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp - voted for Gorsuch. GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia did not vote.

The outcome was a major win for Trump, his biggest congressional victory to date, as well as for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who kept Scalia's seat open after the justice's death in February 2016.

There is no reasonable justification for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's failure past year to hold a hearing on President Barack Obama's nomination of the moderate and highly qualified Judge Merrick Garland to that seat.

Gorsuch's confirmation as the high court's 113th justice marks the end to a bitter partisan battle.

The White House has said it expects Gorsuch could be sworn in as soon as Monday.

LGBTI groups were against the confirmation of Gorsuch because he has, among other things, ruled that the religious beliefs of employers can trump the law.

"Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, concede that Neil Gorsuch is a legitimate member of the Supreme Court", ThinkProgress editor Ian Millhiser wrote on Twitter Friday after Gorsuch's confirmation.

The vote was 54-45 on Friday.

Democrats who opposed Gorsuch said they believe he will favor corporations over workers and will be on the far right of the court.

Fox News reports that as many as five new SCOTUS seats are likely to be filled under Trump's administration, and there is no reason to think that any of these appointees will be anything but conservative.

Gorsuch's arrival at the court as the replacement for another conservative jurist will not immediately alter the majority that has edged the court in a more liberal direction of late, upholding affirmative action, striking down laws restricting access to abortion and declaring same-sex marriage to be protected by the Constitution. "In fact, I am confident we will", said Sen.

Being among the youngest Supreme Court nominees, Gorsuch has served as an appeals judge for the 10th Circuit in the U.S. state of Colorado since 2006. And on that he prevailed on a 52-48 party line vote. He could be the deciding vote on cases now on the court's docket ranging from voting rights to separation of church and state.
