Haley won't rule out strike vs North Korea for nuke testing

Citing an unidentified South Korean government source, Yonhap reported that there were signs North Korea's military was carrying out large-scale, live-fire drills in areas around the east coast city of Wonsan.

At the meeting, army Gen. Pak Yong Sik, North Korea's minister of defense, reiterated Pyongyang's claim that the country is ready to use pre-emptive strikes or any other measures it deems necessary to defend itself against the "U.S. imperialists".

At this point, North Korea tested five nuclear missiles and for the 85 anniversary of their national army, Kim Jong-un will certainly take advantage of the opportunity to initiate another nuclear test.

The US president later told a reception of conservative journalists that Kim wasn't the strong leader he likes to portray himself as.

The situation near the Korean Peninsula has escalated recently, following several missile and nuclear tests carried out by Pyongyang.

Yonhap says that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un likely observed what was one of the country's largest artillery drills.

The USS Michigan, a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived at the South Korean port of Busan in what was described as a routine visit to rest the crew and load supplies.

North Korea's state media was defiant in a commentary marking the 85th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean People's Army, saying its military was prepared "to bring to closure the history of U.S. scheming and nuclear blackmail".

US President Donald Trump personally lobbied UN Security Council members on Monday, telling them they must be prepared to "impose additional and stronger sanctions on North Korea".

The United States, Japan and South Korea agreed Tuesday to put maximum pressure on North Korea, the South's envoy for North Korea said after meeting his American and Japanese counterparts in Tokyo.

The Chinese foreign ministry has previously said any sanctions taken against North Korea must be approved through the UN Security Council, and it opposed unilateral sanctions.

"Cooperation with China and Russian Federation is the most important for effective pressure on North Korea", he said.

Confusion had clouded the carrier's whereabouts earlier this month after United States officials indicated it was sailing towards North Korea when in fact it was heading south. He praised China for its recent steps seen more cooperative toward that goal.

The nuclear-powered submarine USS Michigan approaches to join the US aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in drills near the Korean Peninsula, at Busan port in Busan, South Korea, Tuesday, April 25, 2017.

"The stakes are much higher - the USA believes that it is facing a critical juncture where North Korea is about to obtain a nuclear capability against the U.S. homeland", Zhao said. The submarine arrived on the same day North Korea celebrates the anniversary of the founding of its military. On Sunday, North Korea threatened to sink the carrier with a single strike.
