Henley books Masters spot

Russell Henley carded a sublime final round of 65 to come from behind and win the Shell Houston Open on Sunday.

Henley wielded a hot putter to surge past a faltering Kang Sung-hoon, reeling off three consecutive birdies from the 13th hole at the Golf Club of Houston.

A dropped shot at the last saw Henley finish on 20 under par for the week, with Kang three shots adrift in second. He birdied five of his first eight holes and by the time he was done his double-bogey from a bunker at the par-three ninth was barely a blip in his round.

So Yeon Ryu of South Korea won her second major championship by defeating Lexi Thompson with a birdie on the first playoff hole to end a controversial day and capture the ANA Inspiration in Rancho Mirage, California.

Kang didn't birdie on any of his final 10 holes.

Henley began the day four shots off Kang's lead.

"Russell just played great".

"It hasn't quite hit me yet that I've earned a spot to the Masters", said Henley, who started the week ranked 117th in the world. As a result, he only made two birdies and cancelled them out with two bogeys.

Sung Kang let his frustrations get the better of him after losing his overnight advantage during the final round of the Houston Open.

Henley added one more birdie before a finishing bogey that made no difference as Kang was unable to find a birdie on the back nine. I played really solid the first few rounds and then it shifted for two rounds. "I was planning on not going, but I was going to try my best to win. I'll keep grinding out and working out and hopefully I can get a chance in the next time for myself". "And I started to believe it".

Steve Stricker, who shot a 65 for the lowest round on Sunday, and Bernhard Langer were tied for third, one shot behind the leaders.
