JRFU welcomes Sunwolves' switch to Super Rugby's Australian conference

JRFU welcomes Sunwolves' switch to Super Rugby's Australian conference

Force coach Dave Wessels said the news that one Australian team will be axed was a sad day for rugby.

"More important to that, I go back to when I first came over, doing rugby clinics for young kids and now I'm playing alongside them. My plea is that it will be swift, at least in the next month".

New structure of the Super Rugby competition for next season after governing body SANZAAR announced the culling of three as yet to be determined teams on Sunday.

Sanzaar chairman, Brent Impey, who is also New Zealand Rugby's chairman, said: "This decision has not been an easy one and we recognise the difficulty associated with reducing the number of teams in Australia and South Africa".

That left the Chiefs plenty of time to produce a fightback, and they were the next team to cross when James Lowe dotted down in the corner, however no points were added in the final 20 minutes and Robbie Fleck's side hung on to maintain their winning start.

Roux on Monday outlined the process to get to the four local representatives.

The newly-established Franchise Rugby Committee (made up of representatives of all six teams) will meet on Tuesday to finalise the criteria for selection.

Sinderberry is still waiting to find out from the ARU exactly what they will base their decision on, but feels it would be a mistake if it's exclusively to do with money.

"It's not going to have any effect on the broadcast deal in the current arrangement, that's one of the reasons why the decision has taken so long, we've obviously had to do quite an extensive consultation with all of our broadcasters across the globe", Marinos said.

Clyne said Super Rugby had imposed a significant financial burden on Australian rugby which was not sustainable.

"We're talking about people's livelihoods".

The Hurricanes weathered a second-half comeback from the Waratahs that extended Australia's Super Rugby misery against New Zealand teams. We have been fiddling at the edges too often, trying to make little decisions, which haven't actually fixed the problem.

Each team will have played 12 of the other teams within the season (85 percent which is up from 70 percent under 2016-17 format).

The players' association in Australia has slammed the revamped format, saying they are incredibly frustrated and deeply disappointed by the decision to axe an Australian team. They are the heartbeat of our game.

Flyhalf Marty Banks kicked 16 points as the Dunedin-based Highlanders overshadowed Sonny Bill Williams' return to Super Rugby on Saturday with a 26-20 win over the Auckland-based Blues.

Although the men from Port Elizabeth have failed to capitalize on their undoubted potential over the past few seasons and now lie second from bottom on the combined South African conference - a point above the Sunwolves with a single win from six matches - the franchise is seen as the champion of transformation in rugby and hail from the heartland of black rugby.

"I believe from a school perspective we would still produce a lot of good players but obviously they will play rugby in other regions".
