Judge rejects Justice Department request to delay Baltimore police hearing

The Attorney General has ordered the Justice Department to review reform agreements the Obama administration made with police departments across the country, in the latest move to boost law enforcement morale and independence.

Baltimore could be one city adversely affected by Sessions' directive. The implication was that Obama's taste for federally driven police reform is making police departments less effective.

Updated at 2 p.m. with NAACP comment - Ferguson officials say they have not been notified by federal authorities about a potential review of the city's agreement with the Justice Department involving local police and municipal court reforms.

The Baltimore agreement followed the communist tactic of "pressure from above, pressure from below".

One example is the Mondawmin and Woodbrook neighborhoods of Baltimore, where tempers flared after local residents said police officers' behavior exacerbated tensions in the days after Freddie Gray's death in April 2015.

"It's that type of investigative tool that, for whatever reason or for many reasons, Baltimore has chosen over the years not to invest in that technology", Davis said.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh said Wednesday her administration is prepared for the hearing.

"The Police Department is absolutely dedicated to the consent decree process", Davis said.

Of course, officials in the BPD also parroted the lie.

The Baltimore Police Department is continuing to move forward with reforms related to the forthcoming consent decree for the overall progress of the city of Baltimore.

"The primary goal of this hearing is to hear from the public; it would be especially inappropriate to grant this late request for a delay when it would be the public who were most adversely affected by a postponement", he wrote. "We're three years into this".

Chicago says it's pushing ahead with police department reforms, no matter what the Department of Justice does.

And with Ol' Jeff in charge, what could possibly go wrong, right? "I think [the pullback is] out of a concern to make the lives of people, particularly the poor, minority communities ... safer [and] happier".

The Wall Street Journal provided evidence of the extent of that danger.

But Davis made clear that regardless of what happens, he is committed to reform.

While the Obama administration saw investigations of police departments as a way to expose unconstitutional behaviors and hold local law enforcement accountable, Sessions has been generally opposed to more police oversight and lengthy probes that could adversely affect the entire agency. "The crucial next step of receiving public input occurs tomorrow". Consent decrees are binding legal agreements, and once signed, they are overseen by a federal judge and an appointed monitor.

If granted, the request would effectively stall a process that could lead to a sweeping overhaul in the policies and practices of the Baltimore police force. Such police reform deals rely on federal courts for enforcement.

Davis was reacting to a motion filed yesterday in U.S. District Court that cited President Donald J. Trump's February 9 executive order directing the government "to prioritize crime reduction". The police union suggested that the Trump administration halt the implementation of a series of law enforcement reforms proposed by the Obama administration and to reverse a prohibition on racial profiling installed by the Bush administration, according to the FOP's official website.
