Lawyer: United will save evidence in dragged passenger case

A lawyer for a man who suffered a concussion and lost two teeth when he was dragged off a United Express flight says he hopes the 69-year-old becomes "a poster child" for the mistreatment passengers suffer at the.

After the incident triggered worldwide outrage, United Chief Executive Oscar Munoz apologized to Dao, his family and its customers, saying the carrier would no longer use law enforcement officers to remove passengers from overbooked flights.

United, which is undertaking an audit of its practices, already amended some policies, saying it will require employees to be booked at least 60 minutes prior to departure. The change is effective immediately.

The policy change comes in the wake of a highly publicized incident on April 9 in which a paying customer who had already boarded was violently dragged off the aircraft by law enforcement officers.

Footage of the incident went viral, and United has since come under fire for how it responded. Crews could previously be booked until the time of departure.

According to The Washington Post, United spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin confirmed the authenticity of the published email and said that the new policy is to ensure that such incidents will "never happen again". "You saw us at a bad moment", United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz said during an interview with ABC News that aired earlier this week on Good Morning America.

Delta Air Lines has increased the maximum possible payout to passengers to almost $10,000 if they voluntarily give up a seat on an overbooked flight, the company told AFP Monday.

Meanwhile, Dao's attorney reportedly said that they will "probably" file a lawsuit against the airline.

Almost a week since the incident, United is still dealing with the backlash.
