Liberals blast NDP promise of yearly $400 rent rebate in BC

Jodie Wickens

- The platform includes $717 million in new spending for this fiscal year but the NDP is still forecasting a $108 million surplus for 2017-18 by generating new revenue and finding savings in government spending.

Also in Vancouver Wednesday, B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver unveiled a plan to increase income assistance, disability assistance and shelter allowance by 10 per cent a year, starting this fall and continuing for five years.

Liberal party leader Christy Clark officially kicked off the BC Liberals' campaign in front of a cheering crowd in Vancouver Tuesday night.

"If they're not paying taxes in British Columbia, they're not growing our province", Horgan said.

Speaking in Burnaby on Wednesday, Clark criticized the NDP's proposal, saying a rent credit would line the pockets of wealthy tenants who may live in penthouses in downtown Vancouver.

The party says that money will pay for the commitment to eliminate tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges.

The first order of business for the NDP is making life more affordable for British Columbians.

"The challenge with the Pattullo Bridge is we need to make decisions probably by the end of this year regarding the replacement, and the previous plan included half the funding of that new bridge to be covered by tolls", he said.

CMHC has documented how much rental housing prices increased from 2015 to 2016. Clark attacked the NDP on what she called their lack of financial planning.

The BC NDP leader pledged to help renters in B.C. with a $400 rebate to offset forever rising rental prices in numerous province's cities.

- The New Democrats promised to provide more resources for renters to file complaints through the Residential Tenancy Act and forbid landlords from using renovations as an excuse to evict tenants and sidestep restrictions around rent hikes.

The overall vacancy rate for these buildings fell to 0.7 percent.

Clark made the comments after touring the clean energy technology company General Fusion.

Premier Christy Clark started off the 2017 election campaign Tuesday with a visit to Government House to dissolve the legislature and begin a 28-day run to voting day on May 9.

"The spending that is being proposed here will either lead to massive deficits or massive tax increases, or maybe a combination of the two", he said.

"When you've got more people out of their cars travelling on transit systems, New Westminster wins", she said. "Every single sector of the economy really matters".
