Man screams while dragged from overbooked plane

"While I deeply regret this situation arose", Munoz writes, "I also emphatically stand behind all of you, and I want to commend you for continuing to go above and beyond to ensure we fly right".

The CEO of United Airlines posted a statement on Twitter about the incident.

A police officer who was involved in dragging a passenger off a United Airlines flight has been placed on leave after his actions were deemed not in line with standard procedure.

Three left. A fourth did not.

Passengers said the crew first offered $400 and a hotel stay to anyone willing to give up their seat, but when there were no takers, offered $800.

United Continental Holdings Inc.

"This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United", Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz said in a statement.

United has said that the plane was overbooked and after fruitlessly asking for volunteers to leave the plane, employees selected four passengers at random to deplane. The manager told him that security would be called if he did not leave willingly, Bridges said, and the man said he was calling his lawyer. Blood is on his mouth, chin and cheek as he said, "I want to go home".

The CEO of United Airlines released a statement earlier Monday after a video showing a man forcibly removed from a flight surfaced on social media Sunday night.

"One passenger said after the incident: ".kids were crying and people are disturbed". He recalled a group of high school students leaving the plane in disgust at that point, their adult escort explaining to other passengers: "They don't need to see this anymore".

Less than a month after getting major flak for barring two young teenage girls from boarding a flight because they were "inappropriately dressed" in leggings, the airline is making headlines for all the wrong reasons, again.

- Tyler Bridges (@Tyler_Bridges) April 9, 2017@United overbook #flight3411 and made a decision to force random passengers off the plane.

All passengers were then asked to get off the plane and they later re-boarded.

One passenger said on Twitter that the United flight from Chicago to Louisville was overbooked by four people, with those seats needed for airline personnel.

Smartphone video posted online showed three Chicago Department of Aviation police officers struggling with a seated middle-aged man. "We're all just sitting there in bewilderment asking the question 'what just happened?'"

The video shows men wearing security uniforms pull the screaming passenger out of his seat and drag him up the plane's aisle by his arms.

Audra D. Bridges, who posted a video of the encounter to Facebook, told The Courier-Journal that airline staff were looking for one volunteer to give up a seat before the flight to Louisville, Kentucky, boarded.

Airlines bumped 0.62 customers per every 10,000 passengers previous year, which is the lowest annual rate based on historical data collected since 1995, according to the latest DOT data available. A United spokesman only confirmed that the flight was overbooked, a passenger "refused to leave the aircraft voluntarily", and United called police.
