Manatee no longer listed as endangered

Manatees have experienced a dramatic turnaround and are no longer in imminent danger of extinction

Through careful management of the manatee and its habitat, both the FWS and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have helped the animals' population rebound.

But some things are still good, and one of them is the fact that manatees have officially been downgraded from an "endangered" species to the "threatened" list only.

However there some who are not pleased that the manatee has been taken off the endangered species list.

Minimizing manatee interactions with boats, which are frequently lethal to the animals, will be a priority for FWS in collaboration with the U.S. Coast Guard and with coastal communities in Florida, the representatives added.

Jackalone said that the Interior Department decision also failed to address the impact of the closing of ageing Florida power plants whose warm water outflows manatees depend on during cold winter months.

The FWS says there are about 6,620 manatees in Florida waters now, the third straight year the agency has recorded numbers above 6,000.

Buchanan said he planned to contact Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke to ask him to reconsider and overturn the decision.

Florida counties implementing manatee protection plans and reducing boater impacts.

While government officials say federal protections will remain in place for the species, environmentalists feared that a delisting of the animal will hurt conservation efforts, and give the public the impression that the animal is thriving, when it is not.

We believe this is a devastating blow to manatees.

Manatees, which are found in waters off Florida and in the Caribbean, have faced a number of threats in recent decades, including habitat loss and collisions with boats. But instead of welcoming the announcement as a cause for celebration, environmental groups were pushing back against the government's new status for manatees. More than 100 of those deaths were attributed to boats and other watercraft.

But the manatee's considerable improvement alone would not have been enough to get the federal government to reclassify the manatee.

"The Fish and Wildlife Service has worked hand in hand with state and local governments, businesses, industry, and countless stakeholders over many years to protect and restore a mammal that is cherished by people around the world".
